Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) is a higher education institution under the Muhammadiyah association which was founded on October 24, 1981 as a change of form from IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta.
Initially, UMS was the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) branch of the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta Surakarta which was established in 1957. At that time several departments were opened, namely General Education, General Economics and Islamic Religious Education at the Bachelor level. .
After obtaining permission to be established in 1965, the Surakarta Branch of FKIP Muhammadiyah became two universities, namely the Teacher Training and Education Institute (IKIP) Muhammadiyah Surakarta and the Muhammadiyah Islamic Institute (IAIM).
Two years later, in 1967 to be exact, IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta added another major, namely Civil Law. In addition, in the same year, IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta received permission as the parent of Muhammadiyah Universities throughout Central Java which consisted of IKIP Muhammadiyah Klaten, Magelang, Kudus, Purwokerto, Kebumen, Wates, Temanggung, Wonogiri, Sukoharjo, Karanganyar, Banjarnegara, Prambanan. , Purbalingga, Wonosari, and Sragen. After developing, these branches eventually became independent universities.
In 1979, Drs. H. Mohamad Djazman, Chancellor of IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta at that time initiated the establishment of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta by combining IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta and IAIM Surakarta. So two years later, 1981, IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta changed its name to Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. At that time UMS managed several faculties, such as FKIP, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Islamic Religion (FAI). Then, in line with the demands and needs of the community, currently UMS has 12 faculties and 54 study programs consisting of undergraduate, postgraduate to doctoral levels.
The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education was the forerunner to the founding of the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. Initially, FKIP only had three study programs, namely General Education, General Economics, and Islamic Religious Education. Currently FKIP has 11 study programs, namely Accounting Education, Citizenship Education, Indonesian Language Education, English Education, Mathematics Education, Biology Education, PAUD Teacher Education, Elementary Teacher Education, Geography Education, Informatics Engineering Education, and Sports Education.
